NVR vs cloud storage for CCTV: what actually happens to your footage

CCTV footage is stored either locally on an NVR or remotely in the cloud, and neither is universally better: an NVR has no monthly cost and keeps recording even if the internet drops, but footage can be lost if the NVR itself is stolen or damaged, while cloud storage survives that but comes with an ongoing subscription and depends on your internet staying up. Getting this decision right at install time matters more than most people realize, since switching storage approach later often means reconfiguring or replacing hardware.

How local NVR storage works

A Network Video Recorder sits in your home, connected to your cameras, and saves footage to its own hard drives. There's no monthly subscription, footage stays on your property, and it keeps recording even if your internet drops, which matters more in the UAE than people expect, since even reliable fiber connections have occasional brief outages, and an NVR keeps working through all of them. The tradeoff is that if the NVR itself is stolen or damaged (in a break-in, or a fire), footage can be lost along with it, exactly when it might matter most.

How cloud storage works

Cloud storage sends footage over the internet to be saved remotely, usually through a subscription. It survives even if the camera or hardware at home is stolen or destroyed, and it's easy to access from anywhere without needing to connect back to a specific device at home. The tradeoffs are the ongoing monthly cost, which adds up over years in a way a one-time NVR purchase doesn't, and a dependency on your internet connection staying up for footage to actually upload in the first place, an outage during an incident means nothing gets recorded to the cloud during exactly that window.

How much storage capacity you actually need

This depends on camera count, resolution, and how many days of history you want to keep before older footage gets overwritten. More cameras and higher resolution both use storage faster, and most systems let you set how many days to retain before the oldest footage is automatically overwritten. We size the hard drive to your camera count and desired retention window during installation, rather than defaulting to a single drive size regardless of setup.

The hybrid approach: getting most of both

A local NVR as the default, with cloud backup enabled on just one or two critical cameras, front door, driveway, gives you the no-subscription, always-recording reliability of local storage for full coverage, plus a genuine off-site backup specifically for the footage you'd most want to survive a worst-case scenario. It costs less than putting every camera on a cloud plan, while covering the actual gap a pure NVR setup has.
