The two changes that make the biggest difference on video calls are lighting (a light source in front of you, not behind) and camera position (at or above eye level), not the webcam itself. An expensive webcam in bad lighting still looks worse than a basic one lit properly, yet camera quality gets blamed far more often than it should.
Lighting matters more than the camera
A light source in front of you, not behind, is the single biggest factor in how you look on camera. Backlighting from a window behind you (extremely common in home offices) silhouettes your face regardless of how good the webcam is, no amount of camera quality compensates for light coming from the wrong direction.
Camera position
A webcam at or slightly above eye level looks more natural and engaged than one angled up from a laptop sitting low on a desk, which is one of the most common unflattering setups we see, the upward angle from a low laptop is instantly recognizable and worth fixing regardless of anything else in the setup.
A cheap, effective lighting fix
You don't need a dedicated ring light to fix backlighting, simply repositioning your desk so a window is in front of or beside you rather than behind, or adding an inexpensive desk lamp angled toward your face, solves most of the problem at minimal cost. Ring lights help, but they're an upgrade on top of correct positioning, not a substitute for it.
